Pampulha Modern Ensemble

Pampulha Modern Ensemble

Designed in 1940, the Pampulha Architectural Complex was commissioned from the architect Oscar Niemeyer by the then mayor of Belo Horizonte, Juscelino Kubitschek. Built between 1942 and 1944, the modernist complex comprises four buildings: the Igreja São Francisco de Assis, the Casa do Baile, the Iate Tênis Clube, and the Museu de Arte da Pampulha, which was originally conceived as a casino. The project also featured the participation of the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, who was responsible for the landscape design of the complex. In 2016, the Pampulha Architectural Complex was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
