Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

The Jesuit priest Belchior de Pontes built a new church structure after the couple Fernão Dias and Catarina Camacho donated their lands to the Society of Jesus in 1624. The new construction, following the Baroque standards of the Jesuit community, was conceived around a main building to which a courtyard was attached, while also planning a residence for the priests.
The “church and house” model was adopted, in which the church features a main nave and a sacristy. The convent was built by Belchior’s successor, Father Domingos Machado, bringing together the spaces of Jesuit residence and education. The complex is listed as national historical and cultural heritage and underwent restoration works between 1939 and 1940. Today, the building houses the Museu de Arte Sacra dos Jesuítas.
