Latin American Memorial

Latin American Memorial

Based on the cultural project conceived by Darcy Ribeiro, the 1987 design by Oscar Niemeyer for the Memorial da América Latina, in São Paulo, currently comprises seven buildings (Administration Building, Darcy Ribeiro Pavilion of Creativity, Simón Bolívar Auditorium, Congress Annex, Tiradentes Hall of Acts, Victor Civita Latin American Library, and Marta Traba Latin American Art Gallery). These are distributed across two plazas (Civic Plaza and Shadow Plaza) and connected by a pedestrian walkway that links the two spaces, which are separated by an avenue.
Built in 1989, the complex exhibits a monumental and modernist character, standing out for its iconic concrete sculpture of The Big Hand, representing an open hand, with the map of Latin America painted in red on the palm, symbolizing a bloodstain in reference to the region’s past and social issues.
The complex was listed as a heritage site by CONDEPHAAT in 1997 and by CONPRESP in 2012.
