A Spanish popular dance or song. Varying interpretations of the dance are found in Mexico, Cuba and other Latin American countries, especially Colombia and Venezuela. The Cuban bolero is a duple-metre dance that exhibits closer relationships with the habanera and Afro-Cuban musical styles than with its Spanish counterpart. It is a binary song form that developed from such 19th-century forms as the conga, danzón and contradanza.
