The building is a landmark of modern architecture in São Paulo due to its use of Miesian principles (meticulously elaborated minimalism) and its glass curtain wall. The structure, listed as a protected heritage site by the Municipal Council for the Preservation of Historical, Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the City of São Paulo (Conpresp) in 1992, suffered a fire caused by an electrical short circuit in 2018. At the time, the building—occupied by the Social Movement for Housing Struggle and home to around 140 families—collapsed. A social housing complex for low-income families is expected to be built on the site.
</termNote><termCreatedDate>Wilton Paes de Almeida Building</termCreatedDate></term> </Zthes>
