It was renamed during city improvement reforms in the early 20th century in honor of the director of the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. The square houses the Monumental Fountain, a work by sculptor Nicolina Vaz do Couto, installed there in the 1920s. The work is also popularly known as the "Lobster Fountain".
