Originally designed in the Modernist style by the winners of the competition, Enéas Silva and Wladimir Alves de Souza, the headquarters building of the Ministry of Finance had its foundation stone laid in 1938 and was constructed between 1939 and 1943. The building as constructed was designed by Ary Fontoura de Azambuja, an employee of the Construction Commission, or Technical Office, following a Neoclassical style. Since 1971, the building has housed the Museu da Fazenda Federal.
