Following a closed competition held in 1988 for the design of a new museum, Paulo Mendes da Rocha's project was selected as the winner. The building, almost entirely underground and designed in a Neo-Brutalist style characterized by its direct and raw expression, was inaugurated in 1995 and features gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx.
