Part of the Cultural Complex of the Republic, the National Library of Brasília, located in the southern portion of the Esplanade in Brasília, was conceived by Lúcio Costa in the 1950s and later designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer in the 1980s. However, construction began only in 2003, and the building was inaugurated in 2008. The structure incorporates cobogó screens to promote natural ventilation and regulate the entry of light into the interior spaces.
