São Bento Square was created as a result of the expansion of the old courtyard of the São Bento Monastery. The Benedictine religious building, which was remodeled twice, the first time in the 17th century and the second time in the 20th century, had the courtyard in front of it, which became a square at the request of the city's rulers at the end of the 19th century.
