At the end of the 16th century, the original nucleus of the Freguesia do Ó parish was founded, where the Largo da Freguesia do Ó and Largo da Matriz squares are located. This nucleus was one of the few that emerged on the north bank of the Tietê River and served as a stopping point for travelers heading inland. The region developed from the mid-20th century onwards with the construction of the masonry bridge over the river.
