The neoclassical-style building, designed by Francisco Joaquim Béthencourt da Silva, was inaugurated in 1906. The building served as the headquarters of the Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association until it was acquired by Banco do Brasil. Under new administration, the site housed the bank’s headquarters, historical archive, and library. Through the company’s policy of sponsoring cultural activities, the building was transformed into the Cultural Center and inaugurated in 1989.
