The first chapel was founded in 1616, then the construction of the Cathedral began in 1748, based on designs by Manuel João da Maia. Construction, influenced by Baroque influences, lasted until 1755. Therefore, under the direction of Giuseppe Antonio Landi, the project was completed in 1782, following Baroque-Rococo and Neoclassical styles.
