Duarte Coelho, a donatário of the Captaincy of Pernambuco, built this chapel at the top of the hill of the Seminary of Olinda in 1550. The building was handed over to the Jesuits who arrived in Brazil in 1551. The building was later renovated and expanded into the building that today comprises the complex: Seminary and Church of Our Lady of Grace.
